It was a memorable weekend visiting Kemmannugundi and Jog falls (Sep 5-6, 2006).
I think this was the first time all my cousins were together after a long time…the last time I can think of when all of us were together was Mamatha’s wedding way back in 2002. There have been a lot of functions and get-together after that…and I HAVE MISSED MOST OF THEM :)!!
With all the excitement within, I could barely sleep on Friday night…though I came back from work early (a little after midnight :P), I woke up by 3.30am and got ready!! Thanks to Ravi…he came in on time to pick me up…after all the early morning push and pull…we finally were on NH4 by 7.30am on our way to Arasikere. The breakfast was yumm…at Savitri chikkamma’s place…and I was the only privileged one to have Akki rotti, uppinkai and mosaru!! (Whoever didn’t taste it, missed something!!)
Kemannugundi is such a beautiful place…and post monsoon it looked lush green. It got its name because of the the crimson red textures of its topography. I can still recall a Kannada lesson “Kemmannugundiya Pravaasa” in Class X by Shantadevi Malawada. I was caught up by Shantadevi’s imagination and oratory…some of those words still linger in my mind today. She makes a special reference in that lesson to the way trees stand in the woods. For her, the trees seem to be standing like soldiers ready for a march. I always thought that it was her imagination. But, the drive from Kallhathiputa to Kallhathigiri made me realize that it was not her imagination…trees did seem to me like what Shantadevi thought of!!
It was fun time at Kallhatti Falls…I loved it. We stayed overnight at Shimoga and started to Jog on Sunday morning. The water volume at Jog was just average…so we were kind of disappointed. However, that made us to trek all the way down to the bottom of the fall. The weather was humid and coming back was very tough. I admit, I resorted to a lot of ‘breaks’ which I don’t do normally….and gulped up lots of lime soda and glucose water :D.
As we headed away form Jog towards Bangalore….here are some of the musings worthwhile to share:
Sunil reading Saicharitre with utmost concentration on the way back…he did not seem to be disturbed by the comments Kiran was passing while reading “Crime Story” newspaper..(you guys know what I mean).
Kiran’s prowess of drinking beer in no time…and his pretence that he is doing good when it is obvious that he has a bad hangover…way to go!!
Vinu getting into water at Jog without taking his trackpants and t-shirts off…seemed a little weird. Not sure how he managed to trek back with wet cloths. He claims it was dry :P. I think he was shy at Jog…but, he was the other way at Kallhatti Falls. Can somebody decipher it?
I am still not clear why Manu put up a drama on Friday that he would not come and ended up on Saturday morning…Guys…please tell me if you know!!
Ramesh Pandiyan was a nice guy…liked his attitude…but he was always engaged to his mobile.
Ants loved Ravi (KR) too much…wherever he went they loved kissing him. I think they sang ‘Thangaliyalli naanu theeli bande…O iniya…' and Ravi danced away to glory.
Kumara was as usual with his trivia which I don’t understand!! Thanks for getting those beer cans
Krishna, the bond…made a miscalculation while getting breakfast…guess most of us had half filled stomach… (atleast me)…and it was obvious the way people hogged pineapple at Jog.
Ravi (TA) was obsessed with taking his shirt off on the pretext that it was too hot…but managed to wear his woolen cap in the vehicle as he feared that he would catch up cold!! Hmm…I understood this pretty good.
One of teachers in high school used to always tell ‘sukhakkinta sukhada nenapu hecchu sukhavannu koduttade’ (The memory of a happy moment gives you more happiness than that moment itself)…I truly fit that situation. As we headed towards Bangalore…this folk song passed by my thoughts several times…
Naadinolge naadu cheluva kannada naadu
(the land of kannada is amongst the beautiful ones)
Belli bangar belithaava betta kaadu
(the forests of this land have valuable treasures)
….
….
Sharavati kannada naada bhageerathi
(Sharavati is the Ganga of the land of kannada)
Punyvanthru bartaarilli dinamprati
(the blessed ones visit her every day)
Saavu-novu suliyodilla karaamati
(the signs of death of sufferings would not show up)
Malleshana neneyutidre jeevan mukti
(remembering Him would give you salvation)
Manavanaagi huttid mele en en kandi?
(What have you seen in this world being a mortal?)
Saayo tanaka samsaardolge gandaa-gundi
(Till death, life is full of conflicts)
Eerikondu hogodilla sattag bandi
(Upon death, we don’t carry anything with us)
Irodrolge omme nodu JOGAD GUNDI
(Once in lifetime you have to see the Jog Falls)
